Not in the slightest. The Incredible Hulk (2008). Universal Pictures • Rotten Tomatoes rating: 67% • Heroes: Hulk • Villain:, (Abomination) • Quick synopsis: After an experiment gone awry, Dr. Bruce Banner (Ed Norton, in his only Marvel appearance before Mark Ruffalo was recast as Banner) transforms into “the Hulk” and goes on the run from the US military, which seeks to weaponize him. • See it if you want to see. • Skip it if you’re not interested in Hulk’s banal origin story. • Does it factor into Infinity War? Sorta—Vision is powered by the “Mind” Infinity Stone—and a mid-credits scene shows Infinity War mega-villain Thanos vowing to come to Earth himself. Thor: The Dark World (2013). Disney • Rotten Tomatoes rating: 66% • Heroes: Thor, Loki • Villain: • Quick synopsis: Thor and his brother Loki try to stop an ancient enemy—the “Dark Elf” Malekith—from returning after thousands of years to unleash a weapon that could destroy the universe. • See it if you get a kick out of lots of brotherly repartee and the thought of Christopher Eccleston looking like the child of. • Skip it if heavy, relentless CGI annoys you. • Does it factor into Infinity War? No, apart from another mid-credits scene that explains the weapon Malekith sought (the “Aether”) is actually one of the Infinity Stones. Ant-Man (2015). Disney • Rotten Tomatoes rating: 89% • Heroes: Doctor Strange • Villain: • Quick synopsis: After a debilitating car accident, renowned neurosurgeon Stephen Strange discovers the magic of alternate dimensions with the help of an ancient sorcerer. • See it if you could use a kooky, mystical change of pace delivered by a great cast (Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, etc.). • Skip it if you have trouble suspending your disbelief. • Does it factor into Infinity War? One of the Infinity Stones is encased in the “Eye of Agamotto,” a magical tool that allows sorcerers to manipulate time. Iron Man 3 (2013). Disney • Rotten Tomatoes rating: 80% • Heroes: Iron Man, War Machine • Villain:, • Quick synopsis: Dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder after the events of The Avengers (described below), Tony Stark must contend with a new threat who’s both terrorizing the world and also going directly after those close to him. • See it if you want to see the MCU at least attempt to do something different in its exploration of Stark’s mental illness. • Skip it if you’re getting tired of the same quippy Robert Downey Jr. One-liners in service of a messy story. • Does it factor into Infinity War? No—except, once again, one of the Infinity Stones is teased in a post-credits scene. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Disney • Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92% • Heroes: Spider-Man • Villain: (“Vulture”) • Quick synopsis: High school student Peter Parker tries to balance his superhuman abilities and crime-fighting with just being a regular kid. • See it if you’d like to see the Marvel version of a John Hughes film (it also thankfully forgoes the Spider-Man origin story that’s been depicted on screen so many times already). • Skip it if you are a Hughes purist and reject the notion that a superhero film could be reminiscent of his oeuvre. • Does it factor into Infinity War?
